Large Spur gear machining first requires the use of dedicated software to complete the design and clarify key characteristics such as size, pitch, and number of teeth; then, based on the requirements of strength, durability, and wear resistance, suitable materials are selected; then, the gear teeth are cut using dedicated machine tools such as hobbing, milling, shaping, and broaching; then, according to the surface finish and tolerance requirements, they are finished by grinding, lapping, or honing. Some gears also need to be combined with materials and application scenarios, and undergo heat treatments such as quenching and tempering, carburizing, or nitriding to improve strength and durability; finally, visual inspection, dimensional measurement, and non-destructive testing methods such as magnetic particle inspection and ultrasonic testing are used to ensure that the gears meet specifications and quality standards.

Large spur gears usually need to have high strength, high wear resistance, good toughness and fatigue resistance to meet their working requirements under complex working conditions such as heavy load and high speed. The following are some commonly used materials:

Medium carbon steel
Such as 45 steel, etc., have certain strength and toughness after quenching and tempering, can meet the use requirements of large spur gears under general working conditions, and the price is relatively low, and the processing performance is good. However, in situations where large impact loads and high wear resistance are required, the performance may be slightly insufficient.

Alloy structural steel
Commonly used are 20CrMnTi, 40Cr, etc. 20CrMnTi has good carburizing performance, high surface hardness and good wear resistance after carburizing, and high core strength and toughness. It is suitable for large spur gears with high speed, heavy load and wear resistance. After quenching and tempering and surface quenching, 40Cr can obtain higher comprehensive mechanical properties and is widely used in large spur gears with medium load and medium speed.

High-strength alloy steel
For example, 35CrMo, 42CrMo, etc. This type of steel has higher strength, toughness and fatigue resistance, and can withstand greater loads and harsher working environments. It is often used for spur gears in large and heavy-duty equipment, such as large mining machinery, heavy machine tools, etc.

Cast steel
Cast steel materials such as ZG310 - 570 have good casting properties and can be made into large spur gears with complex shapes at a relatively low cost. However, its mechanical properties are generally lower than those of forged steel, and it is usually used in some occasions where the gear performance requirements are not particularly high, such as some low-speed, light-loaded large gear transmission devices.

Large spur gears are primarily used in heavy industry and the energy sector. In metallurgy, they are core transmission components in the steel rolling process, supporting large-scale steel production. In mining, they power the crushing and grinding processes after ore extraction, aiding mineral resource development. In heavy manufacturing, they ensure the smooth operation of heavy machine tools and promote the research and development and production of heavy equipment. In the energy sector, the transmission systems of some large generator sets also rely on them, ensuring continuous energy output through stable power transmission, providing critical support for production operations in various fields.
