Advantages of steel castings

Cast steel refers to steel used for the manufacture of steel castings. Cast steel should be used when the strength of the casting is relatively high and the use of cast iron cannot meet the requirements. However, the fluidity of molten steel of cast steel is not as good as that of cast iron, so the thickness of the pouring structure should not be too small and the shape should not be too complicated. When the silicon content is controlled at the upper limit, the fluidity of molten steel can be improved. Cast steel can be divided into general engineering cast steel, welded structure cast steel, stainless steel cast steel, and heat-resistant steel cast steel according to its variety and purpose.

Cast steel is a kind of casting alloy, with iron and carbon as the main elements, and the carbon content is between 0-2%.

Cast steel can be divided into cast alloy steel and cast carbon steel according to its chemical composition, and can also be divided into cast tool steel, cast special steel, engineering, and structural casting and cast alloy steel according to its characteristics.

By chemical composition

1. Cast carbon steel. Cast steel with carbon as the main alloying element and a small number of other elements. Cast carbon steel can be divided into cast low carbon steel, cast medium carbon steel, and cast high carbon steel. The carbon content of cast low carbon steel is less than 0.25%, the carbon content of cast medium carbon steel is between 0.25% and 0.60%, and the carbon content of cast high carbon steel is between 0.6% and 3.0%. The strength and hardness of cast carbon steel increase with the increase of carbon content.

Cast carbon steel has the following advantages: lower production cost, higher strength, better toughness and higher plasticity.

Cast carbon steel can be used to manufacture parts that bear heavy loads, such as steel rolling mill stands and hydraulic press bases in heavy machinery. It can also be used to manufacture parts that are subject to large forces and impact, such as wheels, couplers, bolsters and side frames on railway vehicles.

2. Cast alloy steel. Cast alloy steel can be divided into cast low alloy steel (total alloy elements less than or equal to 5%), cast alloy steel (total alloy elements in 5%~10%) and cast high alloy steel (total alloy elements in total 10%).

By use characteristics

1. Casting tool steel. Cast tool steel can be divided into casting tool steel and casting mold steel.

2. Casting special steel. Casting special steel can be divided into cast stainless steel, cast heat-resistant steel, cast wear-resistant steel, cast nickel-based alloy, etc.

3. Cast steel for engineering and structure. Cast steel for engineering and structure can be divided into cast carbon structural steel and cast alloy structural steel.

4. Cast alloy steel. It can be divided into cast low alloy steel, cast medium alloy steel and cast high alloy steel.

Advantages of steel castings

1. Greater design flexibility

This design has the greatest freedom to choose the shape and size of the casting, especially the complex shape and hollow part, and the steel casting can be manufactured by the unique process of the core casting. Easy to shape and change shape, and can quickly produce finished products according to drawings, which can provide quick response and shorten delivery time.

2. The strongest flexibility and variability in metallurgical manufacturing

You can choose different chemical compositions and organizational structures to meet the needs of different projects. Different heat treatment processes can select mechanical properties and can use this property in a wide range and improve weldability and usability.

3. Improve overall structural strength

Due to the high reliability of the project, coupled with the weight reduction design and short delivery time, it can increase the competitive advantage in terms of price and economy.

4. Wide range of weight changes

Small steel castings may only have 10 grams, while large steel castings can reach several tons, dozens, or even hundreds of tons.

Compared with forged steel parts

The mechanical properties of steel castings are not much different in all directions and are superior to forged steel parts. Designers must consider the properties of materials in three directions when designing some high-tech products, which highlights the advantages of castings. Regardless of weight, volume, and quantity produced at one time, steel castings are easy to make complex shapes and non-stress concentrated parts.

Compared with the welded structure

In terms of shape and size, the welded structure is more flexible than forged steel parts, but compared with steel castings, there are still the following disadvantages:

1). Easy to deform during welding.

2) It is difficult to form a streamlined structure.

3). High internal stress during welding.

4). Welds affect the appearance and reliability of components.

Compared with iron casting and other alloy castings

Steel castings can be used in various working conditions, and the mechanical properties are better than other alloy castings.

When we need high tensile strength or dynamic load components, important pressure vessel castings, and core components that bear heavy loads at low or high temperatures, in principle, we should give priority to steel castings.

However, the vibration absorption, wear resistance, and mobility of steel castings are not as good as iron castings, and the cost is also higher than iron castings.
