A gear is a revolving circular machine element with incised teeth (called cogs) that mesh with another (suitable) toothed part to transmit (convert) torque and speed. The logic underlying gear action is similar to that of lever operation. Gears are sometimes known as gears colloquially. Gears may adjust the power source's speed, torque, and direction. Different-sized gears provide torque changes that result in mechanical benefits due to their gear ratios, and so may be called a basic machine. The two meshing gears' rotational speeds and torques varied proportionately to their sizes. Both meshing gears have the same tooth form.

Gear trains or drives are groups of two or more meshing gears that operate in a sequential order. The wheels of a cross belt pulley system are analogous to the gears in a gearbox. A gear's teeth prevent it from sliding, which is a benefit. The phrase "gear" (for example, "first gear") refers to the gear ratio rather than the actual physical gear in transmissions having several gear ratios, such as bicycles, motorcycles, and vehicles. Even if the gear ratio is continuous rather than discrete, or if the equipment does not contain gears, as with a CVT, the word represents similar machinery.

Furthermore, gears can interact with linear teeth known as rack, resulting in translation rather than rotation.
