How well do you know about precision,
tolerances, and the accuracy of CNC machining?
Although CNC machine tools offer these and other benefits, many CNC machine shops misuse the phrases "precision," "precision," and "tolerance" without fully explaining them to their consumers.
The core of accuracy, precision, and tolerance of CNC milling machines will be discussed in this article. You will be able to comfortably discuss your manufacturing projects with any manufacturer after reading this article, without getting overwhelmed by the jargon they use to describe their services.

l What is the Difference Between Accuracy and Precision?
Accuracy refers to how near the measured value is to the real value, as well as the measuring system's capacity to deliver the same measured value again.
Imagine you're aiming to strike the bullseye on the target practice chart to better comprehend the differences between these concepts. Your shooting distance from the center of the chart is referred to as accuracy (the red part in Figure 1). Assume your initial shot connected with the spot marked "x" in Figure 1. This implies that a perfect score of ten will get you nine points. We estimate that your marksmanship is 90% accurate.
You decide to try again after being dissatisfied with your 90 percent accuracy rate. However, if you strike the "x" point three times in a succession (as seen in Figure 2), the situation becomes significantly worse. As a result, we may conclude that your shot accuracy (50%) is lower, but more accurate. Accuracy simply refers to the measuring system's repeatability.
Assume you wish to carve a 100 mm x 50 mm x 10 mm chamber in a metal workpiece. A high-precision CNC machining service implies that the CNC cutter will cut this metal component to your exact requirements, every time. A highly precise (or repeatable) CNC machine tool, on the other hand, will make the same cuts on 100 different workpieces.
Let's speak about tolerances now that you know what precise manufacturing is called.
What level of tolerance do you have?
The amount of variability permitted in the size of the part is referred to as tolerance. It's commonly written as "" (pronounced "positive and negative"), and it's followed by a number, like 0.05 mm.
To further comprehend this, consider a CNC machine shop that claims to be able to attain tolerances of 0.05 mm with their machining tools. This indicates that their machining procedures may result in 0.05 mm (or less) variations from the standard value. As a result, if you ask them to drill a hole in a piece of metal with a diameter of 10 mm, you may anticipate a hole portion with a diameter of 9.95 mm to 10.05 mm.
It is critical to have a high level of tolerance. A little flaw might jeopardize the design's functionality. Let's say you discover another manufacturer that can build a cylindrical rod with a diameter of 10 0.05 mm that fits a hole with a diameter of 10 0.05 mm. You may anticipate your rod size to range from 9.93mm and 10.07mm if this manufacturer can fulfill the tolerance of 0.07mm.
Unfortunately, the rod size's lower and upper restrictions will render your rod and hole components useless or incompatible. Can you see why it's critical to specify each CNC machine shop's tolerances?
What is the status of CNC machining?
CNC machining is one of today's most widely used production technologies. Its high accuracy, high precision, and restricted tolerance range are the key reasons for this. In fact, CNC machining allows you to precisely make over 1,000 identical components with tolerances as fine as 0.04 mm.
All of these benefits, however, will only be realized if you collaborate with a top CNC machine shop.
