Keep these drum components on hand
to avoid downtime
Many industrial processes use rotating drums to dry, chill, agglomerate, heat, and even coat bulk materials.
While in certain circumstances, production may be moved to another drum or simply paused in the event of a mechanical problem, in most cases, an underused drum can damage the entire facility.
As a result, Yogie advocates stockpiling a range of spare parts as part of a successful preventative maintenance program to reduce downtime and ease speedy replacement.
Wear essential drum components.
The following components are deemed "wear critical," which means that the drum cannot or should not function without them. Spare parts for these components should always be maintained on hand to minimize prolonged downtime, especially if the plant is in a distant location.
Bearing for a trunnion wheel
The trunnion bearing allows the trunnion wheel to rotate. Although trunnion bearings do not fail frequently, when they do, the spinning drum cannot continue to run because the trunnions might lock up. If the drum is permitted to continue operating, the tire may scrape against the trunnion, inflicting substantial damage.
Trunnion bearings often have lead periods ranging from 4 to 30 weeks, depending on size, therefore having a spare on hand is essential to avoid weeks of downtime and lost output.
Yogie's standard advice is to have at least two trunnion bearings on hand in case of a serious failure. Because the bearings on a particular trunnion are subjected to the same wear conditions, when one fails, the other generally follows close behind.
Assembly of Thrust Rollers
If the thrust rollers fail, there is no means to stop the rollers from drifting in the direction that the thrust rollers previously blocked, resulting in a potentially dangerous and disastrous situation if the rollers continue to run. This is especially possible if the thrust roller fails due to the roller pushing against it too hard.
Keeping the full thrust roller assembly on hand is often beneficial; when a failure occurs, maintenance workers may remove damaged components, replace with new ones, and repair old ones for future use.
Lead periods for thrust rollers and/or bearings are normally 2 to 8 weeks; if plate weldments are included, the duration lowers to roughly 6-8 weeks, ready for replacement, which is crucial for avoiding additional downtime.
Bearings for thrust rollers
Failure of a thrust roller bearing, like failure of a thrust roller assembly, necessitates that the rollers remain closed to prevent significant roller drift.
Thrust roller bearings typically have a 1-2 week wait time.
Block of graphite
Tires and trunnions are lubricated using graphite blocks. While it may be tempting to continue operating without oil for a while, this might result in substantial damage to the trunnions and tires.
Graphite bricks typically have a lead time of 2-4 weeks.
Additional drum assemblies are kept on hand.
Keeping an inventory of the aforementioned wear-critical parts is essential, but having a few extras on hand can also assist.
Flight
Flying isn't necessary for spin dryers and coolers, but it does help with heat transmission and, ultimately, drying or cooling efficiency. Having spare flights on hand allows for the replacement of worn-out flights when they are required to maintain operating efficiency.
Leaves that are sealed
For the same reason, Yogie suggests stockpiling spare sealing blades for dryers, coolers, and kilns in case any material wears out or becomes damaged. Broken seals do not halt operations, but they can reduce process efficiency.
Components of the drive
Drive components seldom fail, and when they do, it is usually with little notice, but they are nonetheless crucial to the drum's operation. As an added precaution, consider adding a motor, reducer, and coupler.
