There are five different ways to cut gear

Gear manufacturing technology has advanced to new heights due to sophisticated equipment and efficient design. However, in machine shops all around the world, several traditional gear cutting processes are still commonly employed.

Here are five common ways to reduce gear.

Gear hobbing

Hobbing is accomplished with a hobbing machine, which is a form of milling equipment. A gear hobbing machine has two cutting tools, one stationary and the other spinning and pushed against the end of a shaft or other rotating shaft. While one cutter rotates, the other remains motionless, removing material from the shaft. It is the most widely utilized gear cutting technology by numerous manufacturers due to its efficiency and durability.

Milling

The process of milling is the cutting of teeth on the exterior of a gear blank with a milling cutter. The cutting edge of the milling cutter is put into the gear blank and spun to cut teeth. A gear shaper or a hobbing machine can be used for milling.

Skiving

Skiving is the technique of scraping or cutting slivers off a cylindrical item in gear production (usually a piece of metal). This is done to create gears with varying tooth thicknesses, which is a common gear function in many applications. For gear skiving, most manufacturers employ radial arm saws, table saws, and band saws.

Broaching

Broaching is a machining procedure that involves using a broach as a cutting tool to produce holes of a specific form. The tool has the overall shape of a pointed tool with curved cutting edges, which makes it particularly useful for cutting. True Gear & Spline Ltd. uses a CNC broaching machine and a keyway Slotting Machine to get exceptional results. We are the industry leader in offering superior gear manufacturing solutions.

Shearing

Shearing is a procedure in which a cutting tool with indentations that match the spacing between each teeth is used to make gears. Depending on the tool form, the equipment can successfully cut spur and even involute spur gears, and it is simple to maintain, making it a cost-effective technique of gear manufacture.
