What are pulleys' benefits and drawbacks?

The Pulley is a hub type element with a relatively big relative size. Casting and forging are the most common production methods. The bigger size is usually determined by the casting procedure, and the material is usually cast iron (because to its high casting performance), with cast steel being utilised only rarely (steel has poor casting performance).

The smaller size may often be constructed for forging, and the material is steel. Pulleys are mostly used for long-distance power transmission in small diesel engines, agricultural vehicles, tractors, cars, mining machinery, machining equipment, textile machinery, packing machinery, lathes, forging machines, and some low-horsepower motorbikes. Transmission, agricultural machinery power transmission, air compressors, reducers, reducers, generators, gins, and so on.

The advantages of pulley drive are:

  • Transmission can help with load distribution.

  • The transmission shifts smoothly and quietly, with minimal noise and vibration.

  • The transmission structure is basic, and the adjustment is simple;

  • The pulley's production and installation precision is not as high as the meshing transmission's.

  • Overload protection is built into the drive.

  • The centre distance between the transmission's two axles has a wide adjustability range.

The disadvantages of belt drive are:

  • The transmission is prone to elastic sliding and slippage, resulting in low transmission efficiency and the inability to maintain an exact transmission ratio.

  • The contour size and pressure on the shaft are bigger than those of the meshing transmission when the transmission transmits the same huge circular force.

  • The drive belt life is short.

The diameter and other parameters of pulleys used in various mechanical equipment are matched according to the reduction ratio and tailored for the working speed and motor speed. Working speed/motor speed=diameter of driving pulley/diameter of driven pulley*0.98 (sliding coefficient); if a steel pulley is used, the linear speed should not exceed 40 m/s; if a cast iron pulley is used, the linear speed should not exceed 40 m/s 35 m/s; the conversion ratio of motor speed and pulley diameter, speed ratio = output speed: input speed = load pulley pitch diameter.

The groove depth on the reference line is h=1.6 2 2.75 3.5 4.8 8.1 9.6. The pitch circle diameter of a pulley is the theoretical diameter of the pulley's pitch line position, which is similar to the diameter of the gear's index circle. The inner circle is represented by PD, and the outside circle is represented by OD. The outer circle of the pulley may be easily measured and the pitch circle calculated using the formula.
