Materials
The selection of materials for helical gears (including double helical gears) needs to take into account both strength and processability. Commonly used materials are 20CrMnTi (carburizing and quenching, suitable for medium and high loads), 45 steel (quenching and tempering, light loads), and 38CrMoAl (nitriding, high precision).
Processing steps
1. Forging the blank to eliminate internal defects;
2. Rough turning the outer circle and end face, leaving a processing allowance;
3. Hobbing (helical gears) or staged hobbing (double helical gears, to avoid interference) to ensure the accuracy of the helix angle;
4. Insert keyways or mill splines;
5. Heat treatment (carburizing, quenching, etc.) to improve hardness;
6. Grinding, fine-tuning the tooth shape and helix angle, and double helical gears need to calibrate the symmetry of the helix angle at both ends;
7. Final inspection, detection of pitch, tooth shape error and contact accuracy.
