Spur steel gears are commonly manufactured using medium-carbon alloys such as 40Cr, 42CrMo, and 20CrMnTi, or carburized steel. The blanks are either cast (for large, low-speed gears) or forged (for heavy-duty gears with a dense structure). First, the outer diameter, end face, and inner hole are machined by turning to ensure datum accuracy. Then, the tooth profile is roughly machined by milling, hobbing, or shaping. Following this, overall heat treatment is performed, quenching and tempering to obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties. Gears with high tooth surface requirements undergo surface quenching to improve hardness and wear resistance, followed by polishing to reduce surface roughness. Finally, precision inspection (tooth profile, tooth direction, common normal, hardness, flaw detection, etc.) ensures smooth gear transmission and reliable load-bearing capacity.
