A  Helical  pinion shaft is an integrated gear component that pairs with a large gear for transmission, with a smaller tooth module/outer diameter. In terms of machining, due to its compact size, a high-precision milling and turning process is required to continuously machine the journal and tooth profile. The cutting tools must be adapted for fine cutting of the small module tooth profile. Compared to the segmented roughing-finishing process of large gears, this emphasizes process integration. In terms of operating conditions, the pinion shaft often acts as the driving component, with a much higher rotational speed and meshing frequency than the large gear, making it more prone to tooth surface wear and shaft end fatigue deformation.

The machining process of helical pinion shafts must follow the core steps of roughing, semi-finishing, finishing, tooth profile machining, and final inspection and protection to ensure shaft accuracy and tooth meshing performance: First, the bar stock or forging is sawed and normalized to relieve stress, then the outer diameter, end face, and stepped surface are rough-turned to leave machining allowance; then, the overall mechanical properties are improved through heat treatment, and the journals, threads, and keyways are semi-finish-turned with allowance for fine grinding; next, the roughing of the helical gears is completed using a CNC milling machine or gear hobbing machine, combined with gear shaping or grinding to achieve tooth surface finishing, ensuring tooth profile accuracy and helix angle tolerance; then, the key journals are fine-ground to meet the dimensional and positional tolerance requirements such as cylindricity and circular runout; finally, the overall machining of the helical pinion shaft is completed after cleaning, flaw detection, and rust prevention treatment.

Common materials for helical pinion shafts: 45 steel, 40Cr, 20CrMnTi, 20Cr, and 42CrMo.

45 steel, after quenching and tempering, offers a balanced strength and toughness, suitable for light-load applications.
