Herringbone gear, a special type of double helical gear, is a special type of gear, it is a side-to-side (not face-to-face) combination of two opposite hand helical gears. Viewed from the top, each spiral groove of this gear looks like a letter V, and many together form a herringbone pattern (similar to a fish bone, such as a herring). Unlike helical gears, herringbone gears do not generate additional axial load.
Like helical gears, they have the advantage of smooth transmission of power because there are more than two teeth meshing at any time. Their advantage over helical gears is that half of the thrust on one side is the other half of balance. This means that herringbone gears can be used in torque gearboxes without the need for a large number of thrust bearings. Because of this, herringbone gear is an important step in introducing steam turbines into ship propulsion.
