A grinding machine, also known as a grinder, is a power tool or machine tool that is used for grinding. Grinding is a form of machining that uses an abrasive wheel as the cutting tool. Shear deformation removes a tiny chip from the workpiece for each grain of abrasive on the wheel's surface.
Grinding is used to finish workpieces that need a high level of surface quality (e.g., reduced surface roughness) and form and dimension precision. Because grinding's precision in dimensions is on the order of 0.000025 mm, it's usually used as a finishing procedure that removes just a little amount of metal, around 0.25 to 0.50 mm in depth.
