A train wheel, sometimes known as a rail wheel, is a type of wheel made specifically for use on railway rails. The wheel is a rolling component that is usually pressed onto an axle and installed directly on a railway carriage or locomotive, or indirectly on a bogie (also known as a truck) in the United Kingdom (in North America). The locomotive's powered wheels are known as driving wheels. Wheels are first cast or forged, then heat-treated to get a desired hardness.
Before being fitted into an axle, new wheels are cut to a defined form called a profile on a lathe. All wheel profiles are evaluated on a regular basis to guarantee optimal wheel-rail contact. Incorrectly shaped or worn wheels can increase rolling resistance, lower energy efficiency, and potentially cause a derailment.
Almost all train wheels have a curved projection, or flange, on one side to keep the wheels, and thus the train, on the rails when the limits or tests of alignment are reached: when a bend is taken at an appropriate speed, when strong sidebreezes are present, and to withstand, for example, most common emergent defects in trackbed, rail, and mild debris. Hunting oscillation may be found here. Most have a concave running surface that serves as the primary way of keeping the train's motion aligned with the track, while others have a flat running surface that necessitates the use of flanges to keep the train on the rail track.
The wheels on rail cars are typically smaller than those on other forms of rolling equipment (such as locomotives or carriages). This is due to the fact that while the vehicle is in road-going mode, the wheel must be stored clear of the ground - The diameter of such wheels can be as tiny as 245 mm (9.65 in). Wheels for road-rail vehicles in Australia must meet the standards of AS7514.4, the infrastructure maintenance vehicle wheel standard.
