Q1: What is the cost difference between the factory-installed spindle through coolant and subsequent modifications?

 

A: The optional configuration for a new machine is part of the complete machine design, only adding a hollow spindle tie rod, rotary joint, high-pressure pump set, and filter pipeline. The incremental cost is controllable. Subsequent modifications require disassembling the slide/spindle, replacing the tie rod, drilling holes for piping, adding a high-pressure pump station, and modifying the water tank filter. The total cost is usually 30%-70% higher than the factory-installed configuration, and also includes disassembly labor and downtime losses. Even for ordinary gantry mills, if only the internal water system is modified without replacing the spindle, there are still additional costs for parts, machining, and debugging labor.

 

Q2: Can subsequent modifications achieve the same performance as the original factory configuration?

 

A: It's difficult to achieve a complete equivalent. The original spindle, ram internal water channels, seals, and piping routing were designed using whole-machine simulation. Later modifications, limited by the original spindle structure, prevented the creation of truly hollow passages in some older spindles, resulting in reduced pressure and flow. Under high-speed conditions, the rotary joints were prone to leakage, and the seal failure rate was higher than the original design. In severe cases, cutting fluid seepage damaged the spindle bearings. For gantry milling machines with accessory milling heads, achieving center-outlet water from the milling head was extremely difficult in later modifications; most could only achieve water outlet from the spindle body.
