Heat treatment of gears
The heat treatment of the gear occurs mostly after it has been treated. Of course, before the gear is produced, it must undergo a normalizing treatment to lessen the internal tension in the gear blank.
Gear teeth must have increased strength, namely hardness and toughness, in order to transfer kinetic energy. Raw materials might be chosen based on their intended usage in order to satisfy the criteria. It can also be surface toughened to help reduce tooth wear.
Surface hardening can be accomplished in one of four ways:
Carburization
If you put low-carbon steel and alloy steel gears in the carburizing material and keep the temperature above the yield point, carbon will infiltrate from the gear's surface. These carburized pieces will then harden during quenching. By altering the duration of the carburizing period, we may regulate the thickness of the hardened layer.

High-frequency induction heating
A high-frequency induction heating and quenching equipment is used in this surface hardening treatment process. This process, which is a mass manufacturing method, can heat the parts to a high temperature in a short period of time. However, the application options for this technique of hardening are limited due to its shallow hardening depth and high hardness.
Nitriding
This procedure is similar to carburizing, however instead of carbon, nitrogen is employed. The hardness of this process is higher than carburizing, and the hardening depth can be shorter, resulting in less distortion, although the working time is longer.

Flame quenching
This is a type of quick heating of the gear's surface by flame, followed by rapid cooling before the heat is passed to the gear's inside. Surface treatment on a single gear is advantageous since the needed equipment is basic and does not require significant expenses.
