Maintenance of the Rotary Drum
Drums are a significant financial investment and an essential component of many industrial operations. While there is a lot of focus on drum innovation and manufacture, there should also be a lot of focus on drum maintenance and proper training for drum operators.
Drum maintenance should be done on a regular basis.
Regular maintenance, whether it's for a dryer, cooler, kiln, or granulator, is easy to overlook, but it's critical for the drum's longevity. Regular maintenance keeps parts in good shape and allows possible issues to be identified before they become a significant concern. An yearly inspection is strongly recommended by Yogie to check the condition of the drum and to assist in diagnosing and/or resolving any problems that may present.
Operator education
A healthy drum also requires well-trained personnel. Operator training on how to properly check and maintain drum assemblies will aid in the prevention and detection of possible issues. Operators who are unfamiliar with the indications and symptoms of major issues may misinterpret them as regular wear and tear.
The operator must also be proficient at adjusting the drum, as poor adjustment of the drum during operation, as with drum bearings, can result in significant wear or damage. The bearing may need to be changed as the roller wears to keep the thrust rollers correctly "floating" between them. Bearings that are adjusted too much, too little, or unevenly may cause catastrophic harm. To safeguard drum investments and decrease future maintenance costs and downtime, drum operators must be trained on preventative maintenance, maintenance record keeping, and bearing tilting.
The operator should also be aware of when the drum has to be realigned. The drum progressively loses its precise alignment as it wears and must be re-aligned. When the roller is correctly positioned and operating smoothly, it should make little contact with the thrust roller. The driving components should revolve smoothly and without excessive vibration. These indicators may appear to be typical wear, but they indicate that the drum need maintenance and/or repair.
One of the finest things you can do to extend the life of your drum and save maintenance expenses and downtime is to do regular maintenance and inspections.
