Select the proper lubricant for your spur gear

Spur gears are one of the most adaptable types of gear, and they're also one of the most common. Spur gears are utilized in both closed and open configurations and are the default gear for practically all power transfer activities, regardless of device size.

Choosing the proper lubricating oil for spur gears will have no effect on their service life or performance, but it may need a change in how you run the machine.

While spur gears are good at transmitting power, their style of operation results in energy loss through heat, as well as noise and vibration during operation. As a result, lubrication is a critical component of spur gear functioning.

What factors must be addressed while choosing lubrication for spur gear operations? Load bearing, vibration reduction, gear adhesion, temperature range of operation, and so forth.

Because spur gears are not encased in external pollution, scour and contamination resistance is especially critical in open spur gears.

Several industry-wide lubricant standards have been developed to cover a wide range of spur gear applications. These take into account the gear nodal velocity, operating temperature, and other factors. The lubricants chosen for open and closed gear drives differ significantly. This topic is outside the scope of this article; instead, we'll look at spur gear lubrication in a broader sense.

When it comes to spur gear lubricants, viscosity is the most crucial factor to consider. The lubricant must be thick enough to prevent condensation on the gears. It must be able to distribute heat uniformly throughout the gears while keeping spur gear mating surfaces apart. If the viscosity is too low, the lubricant will have trouble clinging to the gear, resulting in increased wear from metal-on-metal contact. Too much viscosity, on the other hand, will result in heat buildup and lower operational efficiency, as well as restricted power transfer.

The lubricant specification for spur gears is also determined by the operating temperature. This will effect not just the selected lubricant's operating range, but also the lubricant's pouring temperature. The type of lubricant will also effect how the equipment must be operated at startup (e.g., startup temperature) and must be considered while choosing the best lubricant for spur gears.

As a general rule, spur gear manufacturers have excellent reason to specify certain lubrication parameters. Before changing lubricants, it is suggested that you follow these lubrication standards and consult your gear manufacturer.
