Mining Trommel Guide: Features, Selection and Uses

May 27, 2026

In mining production, screening is a vital process that affects ore quality and the efficiency of downstream crushing and grinding. The mining trommel (also called rotary drum screen) features excellent anti-clogging performance, large throughput, stable running and easy maintenance. It is widely applied in coal, aggregate, metal ore and mud-stone separation, serving as key equipment on mining lines.

Working Principle

The trommel adopts an inclined rotating cylindrical screen. Driven by a motor and reducer, the drum rotates at low speed. Raw materials are fed from the higher end, then tumble and advance inside the drum by gravity. Fine particles pass through screen holes as undersize products, while large lumps are discharged from the rear end as oversize products. Continuous material tumbling delivers good self-cleaning effect, so the screen rarely clogs even when handling wet and sticky ore.

Structure

It consists of six main parts:

Drive system: Motor and reducer for steady speed and high torque.

Trommel drum: Available in shafted or shaftless design, fitted with perforated or woven screen panels and reinforcing rings.

Frame: Welded steel structure with high load capacity and vibration resistance.

Inlet & outlet: Customizable to match conveyors, hoppers and other on-site equipment.

Dust cover: Fully sealed to control dust and improve working environment.

Optional cleaning unit: Combs or brushes for enhanced anti-clogging performance.

Key Advantages

Strong anti-clogging: Self-cleaning design works well for wet, sticky and muddy materials.

High throughput: Large screening area, hourly capacity ranges from 60 to 1000 tons.

Smooth operation: Low-speed rotation brings low noise and minimal vibration.

High efficiency: Classification accuracy reaches over 95% for uniform particle size.

Low maintenance: Simple structure, easy screen replacement and low running cost.

Eco-friendly: Enclosed structure effectively reduces dust emission.

Application Scenarios

Coal industry: Raw coal grading, desliming and gangue removal.

Sand & gravel: Classification of cobblestone, granite, basalt and other aggregates.

Metal mines: Particle sizing for processed iron ore, gold ore, manganese ore and more.

Mud-stone separation: Screening for earthwork, river silt and construction waste.

Building materials & chemical industry: Grading limestone, gypsum and other granular materials.

Summary

With simple structure, reliable anti-clogging performance, large throughput and low maintenance needs, mining trommels are the ideal choice for mine screening. They are especially suitable for continuous processing of wet, sticky, muddy and large-size materials. A well-selected unit can greatly boost production efficiency and cut energy & maintenance costs.
