The basic law of gear meshing
As we can see from the picture on the left, it is a pair of gears that drive each other.
The tooth profile C1 and C2 of the two gear teeth are in contact at a certain point K. We assume that the linear velocity at the point K on the tooth profile is Vk1 and Vk2 respectively.
To enable this pair of tooth profiles to be driven by contact, their sub-velocities along the common direction of the contact point should be equal, otherwise the two tooth profiles will either be separated from each other or embedded in each other, and the purpose of normal transmission cannot be achieved.
The relative velocity Vk1k2 between the contact points of the two tooth profiles can only be along the direction of the common tangent at the contact points of the two tooth profiles.
