What exactly are 5-axis CNC machines, and how do they operate?

 

Consider how difficult it would have been for mechanics in the early twentieth century to create components and structures. Chisels, hammers, and hand-operated lathes were the greatest machine tools at their disposal. But all changed in 1952, when Richard Kegg created the first computer numerical control (CNC) system.

 

Since then, CNC machining technology has advanced from simple three-axis punch card machines to more complicated five-axis CNC machines.

 

A 5 axis CNC machine is a machining technique that provides virtually limitless options for the size and shape of your created products. It provides great accuracy and precision, and leading machine shops rely on it to build practically any design you can think of.

The number of machining axes indicates the number of directions in which a CNC tool (or workpiece) may be manipulated to produce the desired machining component. Traditional CNC machines, for example, frequently feature three axes, which means their cutting tools may move horizontally on the X axis, vertically on the Y axis, and back and forth on the axis. Z-axis (see Figure 1).

 

A 5-axis CNC machine combines these three linear axes with a table that can tilt (and rotate) the workpiece. These two added rotation axes, known as the A axis (or tilting table axis) and the C axis (or table rotation axis), enable you to handle more complicated geometry than 3-axis CNC machines.

 

The 5-axis CNC machining process begins with the designer creating 3D CAD (computer aided Design) models of the needed parts using CAD programs such as SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor. Following that, the machinist imports the CAD model into CAM (Computer-aided Manufacturing) software, which translates the drawing into a computer program (also known as G code).

 

The G code comprises a set of instructions for managing the tool's movement along the X, Y, and Z axes as well as the table's movement along the rotation axes (A and C axes) to manufacture the appropriate pieces.

Five-axis CNC machine tools allow you to set up the workpiece at once; the machine then handles each machining operation necessary to make the desired product. This is in contrast to standard 3-axis machines, which require many machine settings to create complicated geometric structures.

Advantage 2: Shorter cutting tools and a superior surface quality

The fourth and fifth axes of a five-axis CNC machine allow you to draw the workpiece closer to the tool. This allows you to utilize shorter cutting tools that are less prone to vibration and provide a better surface quality.
