A slewing bearing or slew[ing] ring (also known as a turntable bearing) is a rotational rolling-element bearing that typically supports a horizontal platform, such as a conventional crane, a swing yarder, or the wind-facing platform of a horizontal-axis (yaw) windmill, in combination (axial, radial, and moment loads). Materials handling grapples, forklift attachments, welding turnover jigs, and other applications employ them in various orientations (e.g., a horizontal axis of rotation).


The rings are relatively broad in comparison to a "typical" ball bearing, and they frequently have holes punched in them to give structural attachment. To protect the rolling components, seals can be installed between the rings. Slewing bearings have a tiny section compared to conventional rolling-element bearings, and they require that the structure to which they are connected is rigid enough to prevent established limitations of distortion from being exceeded under load.


Slewing supports range in size from 100 mm in diameter to more than 15,000 mm (usually segmented to facilitate transportation and handling); For example, the bearing on the Falkirk wheel is 4 meters in diameter and can be mounted on a 3.5 meter axle. Slewing bearings are usually made of gear teeth that form an integral part of the inner or outer ring (or, in rare cases, both) and are used to drive a platform relative to the base (as in a winch).


Slewing support designs range from single row ball or roller styles, to double row ball or roller, triple row roller, combination (1 roller /1 ball) or wear guide raceway - each design has its own special characteristics and applications. Older designs can have open rings to tightly control preload during assembly.


Lubrication may be problematic for other bearings that are in reciprocating motion rather than continuous rotation. A stop-start rotation destroys an oil wedge incorporated into a constantly revolving bearing. Hydrostatic bearings with an oil pumping flow can be utilized instead.
