Slewing bearing or slewing ring (also known as turntable bearing) is a type of rotating rolling element bearing that usually supports a horizontal platform with a combination of heavy but slow rotating or slow oscillating loads (axial, radial, and moment loads), such as traditional cranes, swing scales, or horizontal axis (yaw) windmill platforms. Material handling grabs, forklift attachments, welding flipping fixtures, and other applications employ them in various orientations (such as horizontal axis rotation).
The rings are rather broad compared to "regular" ball bearings, and holes are frequently punched in them to give a permanent structure. To protect the rolling components, seals can be installed between the rings. Slewing bearings are relatively thin components compared to other rolling bearings, and the attached construction must be sufficiently robust to avoid exceeding the prescribed deformation limit under load.
The slewing ring diameter spans from 100mm to more than 15000mm (typically in this size range to simplify shipment and handling); The slewing bearing is used to drive the platform relative to the base and is normally made up of gear teeth from the inner or outer ring (or both in some circumstances) (for example, in a winch).
Single-row ball or roller bearings, double-row ball or roller bearings, three-row roller bearings, combination (1 roller / 1 ball) bearings, and wear guide raceways are all examples of slewing bearing designs, each with its own set of characteristics and uses. Split rings might have been used in the original design to allow for more precise preload control during assembly.
Lubrication can be challenging for other bearings that are reciprocating rather than continually spinning. The stop-start action of the rotation interrupts the oil wedge created in the continuously rotating bearing. Hydrostatic bearings with pumped oil flow, on the other hand, can be employed.
