In contrast to other forms of flange blocks or flange units, a pillow block generally refers to a housing with an integrated anti-friction bearing, where the mounted shaft is in a parallel plane to the mounting surface and perpendicular to the center line of the mounting holes. A pillow block may contain a bearing with a ball, cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, or metallic or synthetic bushing as one of the rolling elements. The sort of rolling element determines the pillow block's design. These are distinct from "plummer blocks," which are bearing housings that are provided without bearings and are often designed for greater load ratings and a separate bearing installation. Plummer block bearings are made to withstand more corrosive conditions.
Both kinds are used to install a bearing safely, allowing the outer ring to remain fixed while allowing the inner ring to rotate. Through the perforations in the base, the housing is fastened to a foundation. Bearing housings come in two varieties: split and solid. Split type housings are two-piece housings with the cap and base detachable, whereas solid type housings are single-piece housings. To keep dust and other pollutants out of the housing, several sealing systems may be used. As a result, the housing offers a clean environment for the environmentally sensitive bearing to rotate free of impurities while also maintaining lubrication, such as oil or grease, therefore enhancing its performance and duty cycle.

Various grades of metals, such as ductile iron, steel, stainless steel, and various types of thermoplastics and polyethylene-based polymers, can be used to make the same. The bearing element might be made of 52100 chromium steel alloy, stainless steel, plastic, bushing materials like SAE660 cast bronze or SAE841 oil impregnated sintered bronze, or synthetic materials.
