This is a Career Program (CP) 17 position.
Works a compressed work schedule (Monday - Thursday, four 10-hour work days).
Position has non-competitive promotion potential to WG-11. A timeframe of not more than two years will be given to reach journeyman grade level (WG-11) if the selectee is chosen at the WG-8 level. If selectee is at the WG-8 level and satisfactorily meets the full potential of Machinist WG-11 at any time within two years, the selectee may be promoted to the WG-11 level as recommended by his/her immediate supervisor and with concurrence of the servicing personnel office.
This position requires the operation of a government vehicle. In order to operate a government vehicle, selectee must possess and maintain a valid State-issued driver's license, and must complete and pass the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Accident Avoidance Course.
Moving expenses will not be authorized.

Physical effort : Works requires standing, stooping, bending and reaching; and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 40 pounds; however, hoists, hand trucks, lifts and other worker are available to assist heavier items.
Working Conditions : Works inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty, and where there is a danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive compounds; and danger to the fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces, and moving parts of machine. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes and other safety apparel and equipment as required.

About the Position:
The New Orleans District provides for navigation, flood and hurricane protection, environmental stewardship, and other water resources needs to benefit the people of southern Louisiana and the nation. The offices are located in a modern energy efficient building in the Uptown area of New Orleans overlooking the Mississippi River. There is a child care center and a fitness center on the premises as well as free employee parking. Audubon Park, an urban oasis offering alleys of ancient live oaks, a tranquil 1.8 mile jogging path, a lagoon, picnic shelters, playgrounds, tennis courts and soccer fields is within walking distance.

Responsibilities Using all the tools of the trade, plans, lays-out and manufactures parts and complete items of equipment from different metals and other materials and performs machining work in the manufacture of casting, forgings, weldments and other fabrications. Because of the unusual parts, items required (large size, unusual angles, non-standard threads, etc) for the maintenance and repair of various navigation locks, control structures, bridges and marine plant, it is often necessary to adapt conventional machine tools in order to fabricate required items. Fabricates required part or item, replaces defective parts and reassembles and installs various operation mechanism such as lock-gate operating machinery, water control inspections, etc., to determine nature,extent and necessity for repair or replacement of defective parts or entire mechanisms comprising the operating machinery and related equipment.
Travel Required Occasional travel - Travel required 25 - 30% of the time to Locks, Control Structures, Pumping Stations, Diversions or any other facility as directed within the state of Louisiana (New Orleans District) and occasional travel out of state.

At a minimum, for WG-8, your level of experience must show that you can properly measure using machinist micrometers and calipers, properly cut various material with hand tools such as grinders, drills, saws, taps, dies, mills, bores, etc., properly read drawings, plans, and specifications, and assist with fabrication, modification, or repair. For WG-11, your level of experience must show that you can use various standard machine attachments such as rotary tables, magnetic chucks, taper attachments, and universal milling attachments; and select proper cutting tools according to the type of metal being machined and correct machine feeds and speeds necessary to perform the required operation. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
For entry at the WG-8 level, limited use of trade specific tools is acceptable. Layout and parts manufacture will be limited and under direct supervision from the Leaderman or other Journeymen (WG-11) Machinists. WG-8 Machinist helper will not be required to determine nature of or extent of repair needed but will be expected to participate in these tasks under close supervision of his/her Leaderman. Leaderman will work closely with Supervisor to determine if Machinist helper is making satisfactory progress towards full potential of this position (WG-11).
