Rotary Kiln Support Roller Working Principle

Rotary Klin

The fundamental design of a Support Roller has remained relatively unchanged over the years. The support rollers are supported by a huge cast iron or steel base plate that generates inward horizontal stresses on the rollers and distributes the kiln's weight over the pier. The distance between the support rollers must be narrow enough to avoid high horizontal stresses while being large enough to maintain the kiln laterally stable. Rollers are intended to subtend 60° at the Rotary kiln tyre center, and this appears to have always been the case.

Minor adjustments are permitted to maintain the kiln aligned (i.e. to retain the centres of the Rotary kiln tyres co-linear) as tiny changes occur, such as The roller outer face is made broader than that of the Rotary kiln tyre, primarily to allow for kiln contraction during shut-down.

This creates a difficulty because if the Rotary Kiln tyre continues in the same position relative to the roller, wear or plastic deformation causes a depression to form on the roller face. It is consequently common practice to purposefully have the kiln "float" (i.e. travel uphill and downhill over the rollers) to equal out wear. Because the kiln has a natural propensity to slip downhill as it spins due to its slope (usually 1.5° to 3.5°).

This propensity has been accounted for since the beginning by "cutting" the rollers - skewing their axes by a very tiny angle such that an uphill screw motion is transferred to the Rotary kiln tyre. Because this operation is dependent on friction between the rotary kiln tyre and roller surfaces, operators might move the kiln up or down by altering the amount of friction. Thrust rollers bearing on the side of the Rotary kiln tyres are employed as an additional precaution to prevent the kiln from slipping off its rollers. These are often found on the roller beds closest to the drive, where mobility is most limited.
