Milling is the technique of removing material with rotary cutters by advancing a cutter into a workpiece. This can be accomplished by altering the direction of one or more axes, the cutter head speed, and the pressure. Milling encompasses a wide range of procedures and machinery, from small individual pieces to huge, heavy-duty gang milling operations. It is one of the most often used procedures for producing bespoke parts with tight tolerances.
Milling may be accomplished using a variety of machine equipment. The milling machine was the first type of milling machine (often called a mill). Milling machines evolved into machining centers after the introduction of computer numerical control (CNC) in the 1960s: milling machines enhanced by automatic tool changers, tool magazines or carousels, CNC capabilities, coolant systems, and enclosures. Vertical machining centers (VMCs) and horizontal machining centers (HMCs) are the two main types of milling centers (HMCs).
Milling was first integrated into turning settings, and vice versa, with live tooling for lathes and the occasional use of mills for turning processes. This resulted in the development of a new type of machine tools known as multitasking machines (MTMs), which are designed to allow milling and turning inside the same work envelope.
